Surgery Sanitising and Your Practice: Essential Information

By Ryan Devenish April 21, 2020 Dental Industry

Clients have asked for advice around surgery sanitising during and after the current Covid-19 outbreak.

We’ve explored two technologies – Electrostatic Cleaning and X-Mist – to help meet challenges like reaching hard to access areas and avoiding the cross contamination caused by ‘spray and wipe’. To find out more, including data sheets, see the new ‘Covid-19 Response’ section of our website.

1, Electrostatic technology can be applied to address risks of contamination, HAI’s (hospital-acquired infections) and biosecurity breaches in healthcare settings as an electric charge in a spray used allows better contact and coverage on a surface for improved microbial kill.

As most surface areas are neutral (uncharged) or negative, electrostatic technology adds a positive ( +) charge on droplets from the spray nozzle of a backpack-style applicator causing the droplets - usually between just 40 and 60 microns in diameter - to spread out more evenly as they seek out a negative ( - ) or neutrally-charged surface. The result is more targeted and more consistent with less waste in coverage.

Instead of simply moving bacteria from one surface to another – as per ‘spray and wipe’ methods – risk of cross-contamination is reduced and the comprehensive electrostatic wrapping effect harnessed for broad, safe use.

2, X-Mist (self-deployed version also available) – a product tested to BS EN 1276 and BS EN 1650 – delivers disinfectant to areas including door handles, phones and switches that might otherwise be overlooked or out of reach. Because effective surface disinfection may help to ensure an early containment and prevention of further viral spread (Journal of the Healthcare Infection Society, ECDC Technical Report) X-Mist contains the government-stated recommended level of Ethanol to effectively reduce coronavirus infectivity as well as kill 99.9999% of germs and viruses

It has the benefit of added active agents, giving it the ability to take the log kill rate to a higher level than the ethanol alone (X-Mist is rated Log Kill 6). These active agents enable X-Mist to last longer, so it remains active for up to 7 days on most surfaces.
